A React Native app for iOS and Android that puts a full English curriculum on learners’ phones. Adaptive lessons, video-led units, speaking and vocabulary practice, an AI tutor, and progress that syncs in real time with the institution’s learning management system.

How it works.
The app is the mobile face of an established web curriculum. Units, lessons, grades, and course materials sync in real time with the institution’s learning management system, so a learner can move between desktop and phone without losing their place.
Each lesson mixes video, comprehension checks, vocabulary practice, and speaking exercises where the learner records themselves and gets scored by the self-hosted speech assessment service. An AI tutor tailors the next steps to the learner’s pace and level.
Push notifications carry course announcements, teacher feedback, and institutional updates. The codebase is React Native so one team ships both platforms, backed by a Node.js API.
Hard parts.
- Modernizing the backend underneath a live product while the app was being built on top of it.
- Keeping a mixed in-house and offshore team consistent through shared coding standards and code review.
- Reliable offline-tolerant sync so progress recorded on a train still lands in the LMS.
Outcome.
Shipped to both app stores with the full curriculum, and became the reference implementation for the platform’s modernized stack.
